Local scout group receives boost for new premises

More than 60 young people at the 8th Christchurch Burton Scouts are celebrating winning £100 worth of sponsorship from Saxon Square Shopping Centre in Christchurch.

The shopping park launched its search in April to find a deserving community group or team to receive the donation. The Burton Scouts were chosen from an exceptional number of entries from the local community ranging from bowls and lifesaving clubs to historical societies.

 

Children ranging from the ages of six to 15 attend the local scout group once a week in the same building that has been used since the 1950s. The well used building is now showing signs of its age and is in desperate need of replacing.  

Saxon Square Shopping Centre and its 26 high street and independent stores have sponsored the group for the year starting this summer and its donation will help towards the group’s goal to build the new facility.

 

The scout group, run by local volunteers, has been in existence in the area since the 1930s. The group is in desperate need of a new home and has been fundraising for many years to reach its goal. The new facility will enable the group to expand and ensure that it can continue for years to come.

Anne Burgess, secretary for the executive committee of the 8th Christchurch Burton Scout group, said: “We are so pleased to have been selected by Saxon Square Shopping Centre for this opportunity. Its contribution is a great help in reaching our goal. It is a credit not only to the children and young people involved but also to the volunteers, who dedicate their time to organise and run sessions. 

“Our aim is to promote the physical, intellectual, social and spiritual well-being of our members, helping them achieve their full potential. In scouting, we believe that young people develop most when they are 'learning by doing,' when they are given responsibility, work in teams, take acceptable risks and think for themselves.  Once complete our new hut will ensure that we can continue to work with young people and encourage them in these pursuits as well as creating a suitable venue that can be used by many other community groups in the area.”

 

Bryan Taylor, centre manager at Saxon Square Shopping Centre, said: “Saxon Square Shopping Centre is committed to the local community and we are proud to be supporting the volunteers and members of the 8th Christchurch Burton Scouts through this sponsorship campaign.

 

“The scouts are a great example of how a volunteer group can bring the whole community together and showcase a group of young people who are working hard to achieve their goals. We are excited to be a sponsor over the next twelve months.” 

The group holds various sessions throughout the week for ages between six and 15.  

Beavers – 6.15pm – 7.30pm Monday

Cubs – 6.45 – 8pm Tuesday

Scouts – 7pm – 9pm Friday
