With autumn knocking at the door, our thoughts turn to how to keep fit and well this winter. We’ve spoken to the experts at Boots and The Bay Tree to get their top tips on how to stay healthy this winter.
With the Christmas period fast approaching we all want to be in tip top condition to take on the party season with full force and not be tucked up at home with colds and flu. Here are our top tips to sail through the season with your health intact:
Immune system
The key to staying healthy this winter is keeping your immune system in tip top condition. A healthy immune system will help keep infections and viruses at bay and, if you are struck down with something, you will be able to fight it off a lot quicker. We all know that the best way to do this is to get lots of rest, drink plenty of water and have a good diet, but there are a few supplements that can give us a little helping hand. The two main ones are Echinacea, a flower which has immune boosting properties and an old favourite, Vitamin C. Combined, they can offer a real boost to your immune system.
Winter Blues
A lot of us can be affected by the change in season from summer to winter and this in turn affects our mood. As the days get shorter winter blues can kick in making us want to stay in curled up on the sofa rather than socialising with family and friends. Boosting our intake of Vitamin D and essential fish oils can help combat this and for an extra helping hand why not try Rhodiola a herb with mood enhancing properties, to help us all look on the brighter side of life during the dark, rainy days.
Stress
With the fast pace of the Christmas season, stress is always going to hit us at some point and when we are stressed it affects our immune system making us more susceptible to illness. Being able to combat stress in the first place is the best option. Gentle exercise such as yoga and pilates are great ways to combat stress and if you feel you need an extra boost why not book yourself in for a therapeutic massage.
Too many parties!
We’ve all been there – had one too many drinks at the office party and the next day we feel far from our best. Unfortunately a miracle cure for the dreaded hangover has yet to be found but there are a number of things you can do to minimise the after effects.
Following these three simple steps could help reduce the effects and help you get on with your day: Before you go out take some milk thistle to line your stomach and help ease the effects of alcohol. When you come home take a rehydration sachet before bed to help restore essential salts and fluids and if all that fails then turn to the old faithful of Alka Seltzer or Resolve to help ease away your symptoms the next day.
Info: When taking supplements please read the dosage correctly and seek advice from your doctor if you are taking any medicines.
