Holiday advice: Travelling with Children

May 24th, 2010

If you're going on holiday with children, just getting there can be half the challenge. We’ve spoken with the experts at Thomson and Bath Travel, to get the top tips on travelling with children in tow.

When you're on holiday, you're looking for a relaxing experience from the moment you step on the plane. Of course it helps to have an extra pair of hands to help. Cabin crews are experts at childcare in the skies, and offer the following top tips for helping your family holiday flight fly by.

Baby supplies
Despite the current hand baggage security restrictions, a lot of customers don’t realise that if travelling with a baby, you can still bring on the plane things like nappies, blankets - even baby milk. You have to make sure you bring necessities like this as we don’t carry supplies onboard the planes. The milk you bring can be ready mixed, and its fine if to be in excess of the current 100ml security limit.

Ears popping
Kids often feel the discomfort of ears popping during the flight. Don’t panic - this is normal and quite common. It’s caused by pressure changes in the cabin as the plane goes up and comes down. I always tell Mums and Dads to encourage the kids with them to keep swallowing by sipping on a drink, or perhaps sucking on a sweet. This normally relieves any discomfort inside little ears.

Night flights
If you’re taking a flight at night, remember to bring a blanket or some warm clothes for the little ones – it’s always good to be prepared, especially if you’re lucky enough to be on your way home from somewhere warmer!

Buggies and pushchairs
When you’re taking the family through airport security, remember that you’ll be expected to take your young ones out of a buggy or pushchair – so you might find it helpful to get ready for this. Once you’re through airport security, you can keep your buggy or pushchair with you until you board the plane. When you get to your destination, the buggy or pushchair will be waiting for you in Baggage Reclaim.

Baby changing
Baby changing facilities are available on all our planes, so there’s no need to panic. Just remember that we don’t carry any spare nappies on board, so I’d definitely encourage you to bring a few extra, if you think you might run out!
